Audi introduced the revised second generation of the A5 Sportback in 2020, during the world pandemic.
Along with the rest of the range, the S5 was enhanced as well.

Ever since the introduction of the Audi A5, the S version captured the attention of petrolheads around the world. Its four-door coupe silhouette, the sloped shaped, and the performances were significant acquisition arguments. The S5 was more than a car for five; it was a sports car for a family.

The 2020 version of the S5 came equipped with full-LED headlights fitted as standard and new, single-frame grille design. It resembled the honeycomb grille from the mighty Audi Sport Quattro from 1984. Unlike its famous ancestor, the 2020 model didn’t feature four rectangular headlamps, but only two wider ones. They were available with Matrix-LED or laser to enhance the view on the road. The sloped roofline remained the same, and so it was the tailgate with the retractable wing. In the back, under the bumper, the oval quad exhaust offered a sporty sound.

The interior was upgraded as well. A large, 10.1” touch-screen display was used for the new MIB3 infotainment system. Audi claimed that the new unit’s reaction time was ten times faster than the outgoing MIB2 device, which was already known for its responsiveness. The system allowed voice commands.

The 2020 S5 was fitted with a 3.0-liter V6 TFSI unit. Due to the turbocharged direct fuel-injection system, the engine offered 349 hp. It was mated to an eight-speed Tiptronic gearbox and sent the power in all four corners.

Based on the Audi A5 Sportback, the S5 version offered a combination of speed and luxury, making it one of the most appealing 5-door fastbacks on the market.
The German carmaker introduced a facelifted version for the S5 Sportback in 2016 and enhanced the exterior design with sharper lines, updated the interior technologies, and added some ponies under the hood.

Aesthetically, the reworked design featured sharper lines at the front, a new grille, redesigned headlights, and a lower air intake with sharp blade inserts. At the side, the sporty car remained pretty much the same, apart from the bigger 19-inch alloys. At the rear, the S5 got a redesigned bumper with quad exhaust tips and new LED stoplights. The lower suspension added to the S5’s squatter stance.

Inside, every surface was covered with soft-touch materials. The cabin was fitted with Fine Nappa leather and “S super” sport seats. Audi installed the MMI infotainment system as standard for the S5 and offered a 12‘3” TFT display named Audi Virtual Cockpit in the instrument cluster.

The most significant change for 2016 was to be found under the hood. The old supercharged V6 engine was dropped and replaced by a more powerful 3.0-liter turbocharged unit with even more power, 349 hp. These changes improved the car’s performance and added some bonus points in the fuel-efficiency department.

Audi facelifted the first generation of the A5 lineup in 2011 at the Frankfurt Motor Show, after four years on the market, and the changes also covered the S5, which was initially released in 2009.
The German carmaker found a niche market with customers eager to get more performances from their regular family-friendly vehicles. Despite its sporty styling, the A5 Sportback was a hatchback with a long tail that could transport four people on long journeys, and the carmaker offered them the possibility to get there faster.

At the front, Audi installed a new set of LED headlights and the refreshed singleframe signature grille. On its sides, the silver door mirrors were already a tradition for the Audi S-vehicles. It was a subtle regular vehicle, but a trained eye would notice the four exhausts flanking the diffuser at the back. Also, in the rear, a set of LED, with an option for a continuous LED system, taillights adorned the liftgate and the quarter panels.

Inside, the carmaker introduced a new MMI (Multi Media Information) infotainment unit placed above the center stack, covered in by the wider instrument cluster. The new system allowed better connections with Android iOS devices. To keep their four occupants in comfort, Audi installed front bucket seats and a bench for three in the back, but the middle passenger didn’t have enough legroom around the transmission tunnel. The split-folding bench’ increased the trunk size from 480 liters (16.9 cu-ft) to 980 liters (34.6 cu-ft).

Under the hood, there were no improvements over the 2010 model. It featured the same supercharged 3.0-liter V-6 engine paired to a seven-speed (dual-clutch) automatic gearbox that sent the power in all corners.

The middle ground between a regular Audi A5 and the fierce RS5 version was the S5, which offered plenty of performance while still civilized enough for a daily-driver car.
Audi made an unusual choice when it made the S5 Sportback. Unlike its coupe sibling, the five-door version featured a turbocharged V-6 instead of a naturally aspirated 4.2-liter V-8. While it lost some on the engine sound, it earned more on the fuel efficiency.

They say not to judge a book by its cover, and the S5 matched that perfectly. Even though its look was quite similar to a regular A5 with an S-Line package, it was still subtle enough to pass as a standard 2.0-TDI version. At the front, apart from the red and gray S5 badge, it didn’t show any muscular detail. Its silver door-mirror cases were the same as those from the S-Line version. At the back, though, things went in a different direction. Its quad pipes that flanked the rear diffuser made a real difference compared to the rest of the A5 Sportback range. Last but not least, the lip-spoiler from the tailgate was unique for it.

Inside, it was the same well-built, but not happy, interior. Still, the driver could enjoy the gray dials with S5 logos on the tachometer and the red needles from all the gauges. Its infotainment system fitted as standard took the top position above the center stack in a separate cluster. Audi installed bucket seats with high bolstering for the front passengers and a bench profiled for two in the back.

Under the hood, Audi dropped a 3.0-liter V-6 with direct-fuel injection and turbocharging. As usual in any other S-version, the power went to all four corners.
