Lincoln introduced the fourth generation of the Navigator at the 2017 New York Auto Show.
It was based on the same chassis as the Ford Expedition, but with more features and luxury items.

Ford’s luxury brand, Lincoln, found that some customers were not satisfied with a regular 4x4 vehicle. They asked for more, and just a piece of leather on the seats and the automatic climate control was not enough for them. Mercedes-Benz and BMW already offered the ML and the X5, but the American brands struggled to keep up with the Europeans. The Navigator and the Cadillac Escalade were the first of their kind. The former was introduced in 1997 and, by 2017, it reached the fourth generation.

Designed on the same chassis as the Ford Expedition and the F150, the Navigator surprised the market with its new design language. The massive grille featured a 3D design instead of the formerly used design system with horizontal slats. The designers installed air intakes for the bumper to cool the brakes and a lower grille for the AC-compressor. The vertical tailgate and the continuous red-light strip across the rear panel made an impressive appearance in the back.

Inside, the Navigator used the same dashboard as the Lincoln Continental. The high-tech elements and the floating design for the infotainment screen amplified the luxurious feeling of the vehicle. It was interesting that the designers didn’t fit the screen inside the center stack and installed it on top of it. Like the previous generations, the Navigator was available in two wheelbases and room for up to eight passengers. Another novelty for the car was the 12” digital instrument cluster.

Cosmetic updates have been made seven years into the Navigator’s life.
The full-size luxury SUV receives a new “split-wing” grille that is flanked by LED-infused HID headlights. Gone is the 5.4-liter V8, replaced by Ford’s finest, the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6. Output is an estimated 370 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque, a bit more than the F-150 pickup. The only gearbox option is a six-speed automatic that can be paired to an optional Control Trac Four-Wheel-Drive system. The standard Navigator comes with leather and wood steering wheel, a push-button start and updated MyLincoln Touch.

The Lincoln’s flagship SUV was the Navigator, especially the L version, which featured a longer wheelbase and room for seven.
Designed as a leading competitor for the Cadillac Escalade, the 2007 Navigator L was introduced in February 2006 and was a completely new model. It was still based on the same platform as the Ford F150 pickup truck and the Ford Expedition.

It seemed like Lincoln’s design department was depleted by new talents, and the carmaker brought back the team from the ’80s, and they were happy to put as many chromed parts as possible. Otherwise, it was hard to understand why a 2007 model vehicle featured so many shiny parts on the bodywork. Apart from the huge grille, the Navigator L was garnished with mirror-like sideboards and runaround rims for the headlights and taillights. At least, they didn’t make the retractable running boards as shiny as the other components, so nobody could slip on them. Compared to the regular Navigator, the L version featured a 12” (304 mm) longer wheelbase and extended rear windows behind the C-pillars.

Inside, the designers made a mixed interior with an instrument panel from the ’50s, a dashboard design from the ’80s, and devices from the 2000s. The analog gauges and dials showed similar characters to those installed on a Lincoln Towncar from 1981, with square background and slim lettering. But the Navigator L was all about comfort more than design, which should look appropriate for its customers. And in that aspect, it fulfilled its quest by offering a modern infotainment unit with sat-nav and a ceiling-mounted DVD player for rear-seat entertainment.

Under the hood, Ford placed the 5.4-liter V8 engine paired to a 6-speed automatic transmission. It was the only drivetrain available until 2015.
