The second generation of the Mercedes-Benz GLE is actually the first GLE developed from the ground up on a new platform.
It’s also the fourth generation of the M-Class if you’re trying to be pedantic, since it occupies the same segment as its predecessor. The letter E in its name signifies the model’s positioning in the E-Class family, meaning that we’re still looking at a mid-size SUV. Based on the entirely new platform, called the MHA (Modular High Architecture), the 2019 GLE-Class comes with a lot premieres.
By far the biggest premiere is the E-Active Body Control, which is a fully networked hydro-pneumatic suspension based on a 48-volt electrical system, combined with an air suspension. Technically, it’s even more advanced that what you can find on a fully specced S-Class for the time being. Sporting a drag coefficient of 0.29 on certain version, the new GLE is also the most aerodynamic car in its segment, despite having a larger footprint than either of its predecessors.
