The Alfa Romeo Alfetta redesignated its 2.0-liter version of the GT model into the GTV in 1976. Some three years later, the GTV engine underwent some minor modifications, while also being fitted with a brand new mechanical-and-vacuum ignition advance system. Borrowing several design elements from the Montreal sports car model - like the doors, door handles or bonnet line - the Alfetta GTV became more attractive to the coupe enthusiasts. As soon as this model received a new look in 1981 - redesigned bumpers and new black trim - the Alfetta name was dropped in favor of the new Alfa Romeo base coupe, the Alfa GTV 2.0.
