Presented in September 1976 at the Baia Domizia in Caserta, the Alfasud Sprint was the last coupe developed by Alfa Romeo as an individual company.
It is impressive how much automotive science was put into a metal casing and the credits go to Giorgetto Giugiaro, a well-known Italian automobile designer who worked on supercars and everyday vehicles.
The Alfasud was an important machine, fundamental for the history of the brand, for both technical and commercial reason. It was the first car with front-wheel-drive produced by Alfa and the first to be equipped with a boxer engine.
The iconic vehicle faced big problems as the metal sheets rusted very fast, especially the wheel arches and the pillars around the windscreen and the rear window. It seemed that the workers in the Pomigliano plant did not have a great mechanical culture, thus the metal wasn’t correctly treated.
The Alfasud was considered a jewel of mechanics and design. While the car needed to be inexpensive and still contain the true Alfa Spirit, the car was equipped with a 5-cylinder boxer engine that was bright and offered a satisfying sound. Due to its small dimensions, Giugiaro was able to design a very low and slender hood for the sake of aerodynamics.
