Initially, the new generation Audi 80 model was launched in 1986 on a Volkswagen Group B3 platform.
The top-of-the-range variant of the Audi 80 was the 90 model (also regarded as a more luxurious version of the 80 saloon). Both variants received several updates in 1991, the most important of which being the new Volkswagen Group B4 platform. Other modifications included a longer wheelbase, newly-designed bumpers, restyled front grille and revised rear axle. With this new facelifted Audi 80, the German manufacturer was finally beginning to challenge Mercedes-Benz and BMW on the luxury mid-sized vehicle segment. This model was discontinued in 1995.
