Volvo 440 was a 5-door hatchback which shared a couple of parts with the 480 sports coupe, including the transverse engine and the front wheel drive.
Released in 1988, the first 440 model was kept in production until 1993, being initially manufactured in the same time with Volvo 340. Available in multiple engine versions, the Volvo 440 received a major facelift in 1994 when the Swedish car manufacturer attempted to bring the vehicle closer to Volvo 850, a model which brought a major success to the company. In addition, Volvo improved the car’s safety, providing more security in case of a side impact.
