RENAULT 16
Generations Timeline, Specs and Pictures
The Renault 16 is a large family hatchback built from 1965 until 1980.
The car was presented to the general public in August 1964 when Renault unveiled the first pictures on the car, while the same year on December 2, the first model saw daylight. Available only as a 5-door hatchback and released in multiple engine configurations ranging between 1.4- and 1.6-liter, the Renault 16 was quite a popular car with more than 1.8 million units produced in 15 years. Moreover, this model was named the European Car of the year in 1966.
Under the body, the layout of the 16 model is similar to the Citroën Traction Avant, coming in a front-wheel drive configuration, with the engine mounted inline behind the transmission. Torsion bar suspension, column mounted shifter, an aluminum engine and an electric cooling fan all being part of the package. An interesting feature was the fact that rear wheel axles are not in-line. Yes, the car’s wheelbase on the left side is 70 mm longer from the right side because it had to accommodate the torsion bar.
