The popular vehicle caught the eyes of the buyers due to its luxurious look, both the exterior and the interior design, along with the sportiness and comfort offered over the years.
The Bavarian company managed to sell over 600,000 units of the 5 Series, both sedan and touring versions.

The 5-Series won several awards such as the Executive Car of the Year, Connected Car Award (winner) and others, proving that its success lasted for over 28 years and still counting.

The new 2020 model brought a refined look, with a bigger kidney grille in contrast with slimmer headlights. The car’s proportions were not changed, however, it gained a few inches in length. A longer wheelbase version was also available, only for the Chinese market though.

The 5-Series was already known for its low coefficient drag, thus keeping the tradition, the new 2020 G30 had a Cd of 0.23 (sedan) and 0.26 for the touring, both achieved with great attention paid to the exterior lines and the air flap control system for the radiator.

While the 5-series used to be the bigger version of the 3-series, the 2020 generation brought it closer to the 7-series, by offering pretty much the same optional features, as well as the standard ones.

Available with the most wagons, the buyers could open the rear windscreen while leaving the trunk closed, a feature that eased the handling of light items.

The G30 could be ordered with the BMW Laserlight, a system that was introduced in 2019 only for the top-of-the-line 5-series modules. The system became available for all of the existing trim levels.

The 2020 release also brought the M Sport Package with a new design, including a new front apron, enlarged air intakes, kidney grille bars with aluminum matt faces and others.

The BMW 5 series station wagon version was introduced in 2010, at the Leipzig Auto Show.
In 2013, the station wagon, named Touring in the BMW range, received a facelift, along with the entire 5-series.

The 5-Series Touring was the version for those who require a bigger load capacity. With the rear seats up, it offered 560 liters (19.7 cu-ft) of space. The rear backseat could fold down in a 40:20:40 split system. With all the seats down, the flat platform allowed a large, 1670 liters (58.9 cu-ft) trunk space. To fold the rear seats, a pair of levers were on the sides, in the trunk compartment.

There were two interesting features for the tailgate. The rear window within the tailgate could have been open independently. When opened, the trunk fabric cover was automatically retracted. This feature was good if only a small item was placed inside. The load compartment cover was automatically lowered when the window or the tailgate was closed.

To open the trunk, there were few options: a button on the car-remote access key, a button near the driver, a kick under the rear bumper or, classically, via a small button on the tailgate. The “hands-free” open system was available as an option.

There were two buttons on the tailgate’s margin, which could be used to automatically close the trunk. One was just closing while the other also locked the car. As a safety measure, the car couldn’t be locked if the remote-control key was inside the cabin.

The sixth generation of the BMW 5 Series was introduced in 2009 and the station-wagon for it was introduced in the following year.
The 2010 5-Series Touring was the fourth generation of the station-wagon for the mid-size German car, since the first two generations didn’t have that in the offer. It appeared only from the third generation and it started with some improvements that made it different from its main rivals, the E-Class T-Model from Mercedes-Benz and from the Audi A6 Avant.

The car looked the same as the sedan up to the B-pillars and changed from there on to the back. It featured a longer roof and a raked tailgate. That cut a part of the trunk space, but BMW was not concerned about it. It stated that the idea was to create a sport-looking wagon, and it succeeded. The rear had a twin open system. Like its predecessors, it could be opened with the whole tailgate or only the windscreen. The parcel shelf in the back was automatically lifted in both situations to allow placing or removing items from the back.

Inside, the front side featured the same amenities as the sedan version. In the back, the 40:20:40 split rear bench backseat allowed a bigger trunk space than the sedan, but less than into an Audi A6 or in a Mercedes-Benz E-Class T-Model. With the seats folded, it formed a completely flat surface area.

For the engine compartment, the Touring version of the 5-Series was offered with a choice of diesel and gasoline units. For base models, the 6-speed manual transmission was fitted as standard, but for the more powerful versions, 8-speed automatic transmission was available. For selected versions, BMW offered an all-wheel-drive traction system.

The fifth generation of the 5-Series Touring went through a facelift along with its sedan siblings in 2007.
Despite the world economic crisis, it managed to survive until 2010, when it was replaced.

The facelift was scheduled before the first signs of an economic crisis appeared. With the “show must go on” attitude, the German car-maker upgraded all the 5-Series lineup and moved on. New emission regulations were due to appear in Europe, so some parts needed to be improved while some others had to be changed.

From the outside, the headlights came with new clear glass technology, transparent glass panels covering the direction indicators, and chrome surrounds. The kidney-grille was now flash to the air-dam. A new side-sill was installed, amplifying the car’s length. Like the headlights at the front, the rear lights also came in a new, sophisticated clear-glass look and featured LED turn signals.

Inside, the 2007 5-Series was enhanced with new materials, with pleasant rubber finish on the controls for smooth and easy handling. The door panels featured a twin-tone finish: black trim bars at the top and the lower panel section. Some new additional storage options gave the 2007 5-Series an enhanced practical function. The split rear seatback was kept to increase the load area. New safety features were installed with adaptive cruise control and automatic braking.

For the engine-compartment, the 2007 5-Series Touring featured an improved range, and, apart from the M5 version, the top-of-the-line version was the 550i with 360 hp.

The 2004 BMW 5 Series station-wagon, or Touring as it was named by the car manufacturer, was the third generation for that body type.
The first two generations of the 5-Series had only the four-door sedan version.

It was designed during the Chris Bangle era, even though he wasn’t the actual designer of the vehicle. He was just in charge of the final look. It was a large car with big engines. It even had an M5 model, with the mighty V10 unit that offered 500 hp.

The look was in the “flame surfacing” theme imagined by Chris Bangle. But it had a controversial design, especially on the headlights, which were completely unusual for a BMW, with extended wing-like corners on the front fenders. Some called them “Dragon-style”, while others just said that those were “Angel wings”. In the rear, there was sloped tailgate. That had an interesting feature: the rear window could have been open without the entire tailgate.

Inside the vehicle, there was enough room for up to five adults and 500 liters (17.7 cu-ft) of trunk space that could have been increased up to 1650 liters (58.3 cu-ft), with the rear seats folded.

For the engine and transmission versions, there was something for everyone. Apart from the special M5 Touring version, it offered a power range between 160 hp and 361 hp, both gasoline and diesel. The standard transmission was a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic, depending on the engine.

In 1997, the awaited station wagon for the BMW 5 Series E39 was launched.
It was longer than the sedan version, but not by much. Just enough to make a good looking wagon. It was an instant hit for the premium station wagon market all over Europe and in the U.S. The 2000 kg (4400 lbs) towing ability and a big trunk transformed it into a favorite for the families.

Standard features included air conditioning, four power windows, traction control, on-board computer, ABS, airbags and an adjustable steering wheel.

The 4805 mm (15.8 ft) long car could accommodate five people and 410 liters (23 cu-ft) of luggage in the trunk with the rear seats up.

The gasoline engines offered started with an inline 6 unit with a 2.0-liter displacement and went up to a 4.4 liter V8 with outputs ranging between 150 hp and 286 hp, respectively. Another lineup of turbodiesel engines was prepared for Europe, with a displacement of 2.0-liter and 3.0-liter. Transmissions offered were either a 5 or 6-speed manual, depending on the engine, and a 5-speed automatic as an option for most of the versions, but it was standard on the 540i with the 4.4-liter and 286 hp engine.

Unlike the sedan sibling, the top performer 400 hp M5 was not available for the station-wagon.

After five years of the third generation of the 5-Series, BMW introduced the station wagon version for its mid-size sedan.
It was hard to take the decision, but it was a successful one.

In the mid-’80s, the only premium station-wagon for the mid-size segment was the Mercedes-Benz E-Class. The general idea was that the premium segment customers don’t buy station-wagons. But the segment started to pick-up and BMW management decided to take a piece of the market.

The third generation of 5-Series was launched in 1987 but it wasn’t until 1994 when they launched the station-wagon. It looks like the design team waited to see how the three-box model will be received by the market and only after that they started to work on the project. The cars were identical up to the B-pillar. Even the lower part of the rear doors was the same. But what happened above the beltline was a different story. The longer roof and the bigger trunk added practicality. The German car-manufacturer already had some experience with that type of bodywork from the smaller BMW 3-Series Touring. The individual opening of the rear window feature was added to the 5-Series as well.

Inside the vehicle, there was the same interior as in the sedan version, but the rear seats were folding type in a 60:40 split.

For the engine compartment, the four-cylinder units were deleted from the option list and only inline-six and V8s were installed. It also had the all-wheel-drive system on the 525iX (2.5-liter engine).
