Unveiled just a few months before its Shooting Brake brother, the Mercedes-AMG CLA 35 4Matic compact four-door coupe combines the same feeling of a sporty compact with the more ample space of a sedan, being almost as long as a C-Class but a lot sleeker looking.
Apart from the larger trunk space and frameless doors for an improved coupe look, the model is nearly identical regarding technical specs with both the Mercedes-AMG A 35 4Matic and the CLA 35 4Matic Shooting Brake.

The CLA 35 is therefore powered by a newly developed, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder based on the M 260 mill available in the W177 A-Class. Developing 306 horsepower and a healthy 400 Nm of torque from 3,000 rpm, the small but fierce engine can accelerate the elegant compact four-door coupe from 0 to 100 kph (62 mph) in just 4.9 seconds, onwards to an electronically limited top speed of 250 kph (155 mph).

Just all the other “35” models, the CLA 35 sends its power to all four wheels through a 4Matic all-wheel-drive system and a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. The torque distribution between the front and rear axles is infinitely variable from pure FWD to a 50:50 percent distribution to the front and rear, without benefitting from the same “drift mode” that is available on the more powerful Mercedes-AMG 45 models.

The original Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 was so well received that the Germans not only decided to make a second generation but also expand the lineup from a single model to two distinct versions.
This said, even the standard second-generation CLA 45 comes with a more powerful engine than its predecessor, not to mention that it’s simply filled with high technology.

Borrowing the same 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder from the second-generation A 45, the basic Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 has no less than 387 Ps and 475 Nm of torque, which allow the car to sprint from 0 to 100 kph (62 mph) in just 4.1 seconds. The CLA 45 S, on the other hand, benefits from 421 PS and 500 Nm of torque, which are more than enough to propel the compact four-door coupe from naught to 100 kph (62 mph) in 4 seconds flat. Both versions use a newly developed eight-speed dual-clutch transmission and all-wheel-drive to transmit the power to the ground. Standard on the “S” and available as part of an optional package on the base version, a so-called “Drift Mode” allows the model to send more power to the rear axle, whose each wheel can get up to 100 percent.

2019 2022

When Mercedes-Benz launched the first A45 AMG 4Matic, it shook the world.
Even if it never was a truly rally-oriented brand, its results have been far better than what other brands with WRC titles in their pockets. And now it’s for a whole family.

The new CLA Shooting Brake comes with enough room for a family and has enough performance for a fast driver on a winding road and some loose surfaces. Mercedes-AMG uses the most powerful four-cylinder 2.0-liter engine in the world. With a power of 387 hp or 421 hp (S version) the new engine breaks all the previous records. Thanks to this high-power AMG engine and with help from the 4Matic+ all-wheel-drive system and AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 8G dual-clutch transmission, the results bring it close to supercars. The 0-62 mph (100 kph) sprint is done in 4.1 seconds by the 387 hp version and 4.0 seconds flat by the S version (421 hp).

The Shooting Brake body is not a common style to see on the roads. But Mercedes did it for the CLS and also for the CLA Shooting Brake. The streamed lines and the frameless windows are part of the sleek, elegant yet sporty look. The long hood can trick someone that the engine is mounted longitudinally, but actually it is a transverse engine. But aesthetically, it creates a great image balance. In the rear, the trunk space has enough room for a lot of luggages: 505 liters with the rear seats up.
