It is the most iconic model from the Morgan lineup: the Plus 4.
A roadster with oldtimer looks and cutting edge technologies hidden under a beautiful bodywork fit for up to four passengers, but most commonly used by a single person. Morgan was known for being one of the few remaining carmakers in the world that built vehicles based on a wooden chassis. But that was up until 2019, when it traded wood for aluminum, in the new so-called CX-Generation platform. The chassis weighs only 97 kg (214 lbs). For the exterior retro-style look, Morgan kept the 15” wire wheels, but with a new design that still references sports cars from the 1960s and 70s.

For the first time ever, Morgan installed a turbocharged four-cylinder under the hood. It is a 2.0-liter unit from BMW, which develops 255 hp and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque in the automatic variant and the same power but 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque for the manual six-speed version. That said, the automatic version is actually quicker to 100 kph (62 mph) from standing still. It makes a 4.8 seconds sprint, compared to the 5.2 seconds sprint for the manual version.

Morgan tradition remains crucial to the production of the new Plus Four. Everything is hand-made, from the frame to the aluminum panels and interior. The craftsmanship is specific to the Morgan company, but without losing any modern technologies. The car has LED front and rear lighting and, for the inside, there is an in-car audio system with Bluetooth connectivity. Morgan hasn’t mentioned if Android Auto or Apple CarPlay are supported.

The Morgan Plus 4 was like a time capsule for two people, but with the addition of two extra seats in the back, it was a charming time journey for a whole family.
Unlike most other carmakers, the Morgan company belonged to the same family since its beginning in 1910. Over time, it managed to improve its products, but only when it was required. In 1950, it introduced the +4 model and built it almost unchanged for over fifty years. The four-seat option was canceled by the mid-’80s due to safety regulations. By the 2000s, the carmaker brought that option back. In 2006, the carmaker had to improve the car, again, due to emission requirements.

Judged by its look, the Morgan +4 4 Seater looked like a vehicle from the ’50s. Its wide, long, and curved front wheel fenders featured round headlights with chromed rims around the glass area. Its turn signals were placed below them. Unlike the two-seat version, the 4-Seater featured side windows for the rear passengers. In the back, the car featured an extended body that supported the spare wheel and the taillights.

Inside, the hand-crafted leather-clad interior was a mix between old fashion and new elements. The tachometer was optimistically marked up to 9.000 RPMs, and the charging port for a smartphone as part of the new edge. Its bucket seats featured adjustable headrests and seat belts. Maybe that’s how Morgan passed the safety tests.

Under the hood, the car manufacturer mixed a Ford engine with a Mazda gearbox. It didn’t provide too much power or torque, but it was more than enough, thanks to the car’s low weight. Worth mentioning that the car featured the same suspension design from the original 1950 model.

The biggest seller of the Morgan Motor Company, the Morgan Plus 4 was a 2-seater sports car with a retro, classical design.
Around since 1950, the Plus 4 didn’t change much when it comes to the exterior look, as the body was still curvy with chrome accents, and the front fenders were pretty much 2/3 of the car’s length.

Fitted with a 2.0-liter 40cylinder engine, the Plus 4 had 153 hp under the hood. While it might not sound like a lot for a sports car, the vehicle weighed only 900 kg.

Not designed to offer a modern ride, the Morgan Plus 4 did not offer a light steering or a very comfortable ride. The main purpose was to build a car that would provide a raw experience, with the heavy steering that made its drivers feel more connected to the road.

The Morgan Plus 4 was not an easy car to drive, as even tiny mistakes would not have been forgiven or compensated with an adaptive suspension or features enhancing comfort.

The cabin had a spartan design, however, it was beautifully finished with comfortable leather. We can tell that great attention was paid to the details by looking at the perfectly crafted stitchings.

The noise wind inside the Plus 4 was atrocious, but really, nobody bought a Plus 4 to complain about the wind and the suspension. The experience offered was unique and driving the classic vehicle was challenging to say the least.
