Vauxhall tried to won back younger customers and introduced a sportier version for the Astra range, and introduced the Sport Hatch version on the market in 2004.
General Motors introduced a sportier version for its compact-segment contender Astra in 2004. It tried to replace the Astra Coupe from its previous generation, with a more practical bodywork but without losing the advantages of a hatchback.

The Astra Sport Hatch came with a very raked windshield and a sloped back that made the car look like a coupe rather than a hatchback. The narrowed rear triangular windows and the big tailgate transformed the otherwise dull Astra into an eye-catcher for the younger generation.

Inside, it wasn’t different than the rest of the Astra range, featuring the same three-dials instrument cluster and an infotainment screen installed on top of the center stack. Its sport-bucket standard seats were designed for comfort rather than for spirited driving. A set of high-bolstered seats were available on the options list for the base trim levels and standard for the upper versions. In the back, the high center tunnel was big, preventing three people from sitting on the split-folding bench.

Under the hood, the Astra Sport Hatch was offered with a wide choice of diesel and gasoline engines paired to a 5- or 6-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic, depending on the engine.
